    About Us

The Community Foundation of Washington County, MD, is one of more than 700 similar 501(C) (3) organizations throughout the United States that work to make their communities better places to live.

The Community Foundation serves as a hub for charitable giving in Washington County. We work in partnership with charitable-minded individuals and groups who want to give something permanent back to their communities.

The Foundation has been growing steadily since its inception in 1997 and currently oversees a pool of over 150 funds supporting a wide variety of charitable causes. These Funds are the basic building blocks of the Foundation and have originated from a variety of sources: individuals, families, businesses, financial institutions, probate courts, private foundations, as well as charitable organizations themselves.

With a professional staff and active Board of Trustees, the Foundation provides substantial benefits to those contemplating charitable giving programs.

    Simplicity
Anyone can create a program for charitable giving in Washington County by executing a simple agreement with the Foundation. The Foundation carefully invests the gift, monitors its earnings, handles tax reporting and other administrative details, and makes gifts as stated in the Fund agreement.

    Tax Treatment
All contributions to the Community Foundation qualify for maximum deductibility for income and gift tax purposes.

    Professional Management

The Foundation's Board of Trustees is comprised of experienced business professionals and civic leaders who provide sound, flexible administration of endowment assets and reliable investment strategies.

    Perpetuity
Unless a donor wishes otherwise, original gifts are never spent, but instead remain fully invested as permanent endowments, providing increasing income for charitable giving year after year.

    Family Legacy
Families and individuals may choose to name their own endowment Funds to create a philanthropic legacy in the community.

    Public Accountability
In its Articles of Incorporation, the Community Foundation of Washington County promises to use Funds for the public interest. An independent, professional audit is conducted annually and all Foundation gifts, grants, and distributions are publicly disclosed, though individual donors may choose to remain anonymous.

    Branches Of Our Giving Tree
Anyone may become a philanthropist through gifts to the Community Foundation of Washington County. Let us help you create a better future that can be passed from one generation to the next. The Community Foundation of Washington County offers you permanent, yet flexible, ways to make a significant difference through your giving, including:

    1. The Foundation accepts donations to existing Funds in any amount and form. The donations are invested as permanent endowments that earn annual returns for disbursement to qualified charitable causes.
    2. The Foundation can create new Funds with a minimum donation of $5,000.  At the donor's request, the original donation is never spent and continues to generate income in perpetuity, creating a tax-deductible legacy of giving for generations to come.

    Endowments
Endowment Funds managed by the Community Foundation of Washington County help support a wide variety of worthy causes and charitable interests - from Little Leagues to little lost kittens, and from the basic necessity of a warm bed on a cold night to the stirring beauty of live classical music.

All of the individuals and organizations that come to the Community Foundation of Washington County with charitable interests have one thing in common - the desire to reach out to their communities and help others. Their visions, however, vary widely. The Funds and options provided by the Community Foundation offer several general categories for giving. In this way, the branches of the Community Foundation are reaching all over Washington County.

Community Funds address the community's needs and promising opportunities relating to arts and culture, education, health care, human services, environment, and historic preservation and other worthy causes. The distribution of these Funds is determined by active members of the community who serve on the Board of Trustees' Grants Allocation Committee.

Designated Funds provide a way for donors to specify one or more organization(s) to receive annual or periodic support.

Donor Advised Funds allow donors to remain actively involved in their gift making by annually recommending grants to their favorite charities.

Field of Interest Funds support one or more general areas of interest selected by the donor. A Field of Interest Fund can support areas such as arts and culture, education, services to the needy, or other similar efforts. However, these funds are not tied to a single organization.

Non-endowed Donor Advised Funds allow donors to make periodic contributions to the Foundation at their convenience, with the option of disbursing to charities over time.

Scholarship Funds benefit local students. Donors may determine specific criteria and participate in the selection process.
