Join the Community Foundation of Washington County in our third BIG READ! A month-long opportunity to feed your mind with events commemorating the works of Edgar Allan Poe. All events are free unless otherwise indicated in the description. |
March 29 and March 30

Poe Comes Alive in a living history presented by the Traveling Jones Theatre.
Programs planned at E. Russell Hicks Middle and Boonsboro High on March 29th,
Clear Spring Middle and Clear Spring High on March 30th.
March 31
10 AM to 1 PM
Antietam Academy High School continues a BIG READ tradition with historical and cultural connections to works by Edgar Allan Poe. Carnival games introduce the Cask of Amontillado, followed by a visual interpretation of The Raven presented by students. Readings and book distribution will wrap up the activities taking place at Maranatha Brethren Church in Hagerstown.

Visit the Edgar Allan Poe Exhibition at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts!
Poe painted with words and his poems and stories convey vivid images
of people, places and emotions. This exhibition links the evocative language of Poe with works of art that visually capture the mysterious and sometimes horrific nature of his writing.

Discussion of the works of Poe at the Keedysville Library at 6 PM.
April 7
Discussion of the works of Poe at the Sharpsburg Library at 10 AM.
Discussion of the works of Poe at the Clear Spring Library at 11 AM.

Brown bag lunch and discussion Poe at the Downtown Library at noon.

BIG READ meets BIG BLEED at HCC Commons
Come donate blood to the American Red Cross and receive a book of work by
Edgar Allan Poe!

Discussion of the works of Poe at the Williamsport Library at 2 PM.
Discussion of the works of Poe at the Boonsboro Library at 6 PM.
April 16
South Hagerstown High Media Center
Dr. Robert Kachur of McDaniel College will present
"The Horror Genre: Why We Like to Be Scared".
Discussion and dissection of Poe's works, along with other significant writings in this genre.
April 18
Academy Theatre
The Life and Works of Edgar Allan Poe, an original presentation written by
Pat Stine and directed by Peggy Hardinge at 2 PM.
The play will be preceded by a brunch at 12:30 in the Theatre Banquet Center.
Show tickets $10 for adults and $5 for students and children.

Maryland Theatre
Free 6 PM screening of "The Fall of the House of Usher" and
"The Pit and the Pendulum."
Come in "Poe-esque" costume for free refreshments!

Join Jeff Korman from the Maryland State Resource Center for a discussion of Poe's work, his life, and his mysterious death at the downtown branch of the library at 7 PM.
April 22
Poe Movie Night at the Clear Spring Library at 6:30 PM.
April 25
BIG READ Finale
Hosted at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts beginning at 2 PM.
Culmination of Washington County's third Big Read. Reception for all writing and art contestants, displays of submitted work, tours of Edgar Allan Poe Exhibition in the Baer Gallery, discussion of Poe's work, public readings of Poe and other works by local celebs.
April 27
Last chance discussion of the works of Poe at the Smithsburg Library at 5 PM.
